Gone Fishin'

Okay, well went fishin', since it was last week.

Or, to be more accurate, Keith went fishin'...and me and Victoria stayed around camp.  It was fun!  We had a blast watching wildlife and playing in the river and oohing and aahing over the deer that came right into our camp to say hi.  We had the place (mostly) to ourselves until Friday, when everyone else decided to converge on Colorado Bend.  So it was nice.

Victoria checking Daddy's work putting up the tent.

Our makeshift "play area" -- thanks to Gerald!  If you ever go camping with a toddler, one of these is a must.

The deer that came to dinner.  Keith and Gerald were probably wishing the deer was for dinner.

It's blurry, but that's Daddy and Victoria in the middle of the river.

A happy Punkin Head.

The view from our campsite.

All was pretty good...until we got home to our clean, sweet-smelling, indoor-plumbing house to find that it was pretty well rank with the scent of death.  The death of our deep freezer, that is, along with 300+ lbs of meat....mostly from a calf a friend butchered a few months back.  We were just about to dig in to the "good" meat (ie: we were finishing up some older meat from Sams and the grocery store) when all this happened.  It was awful.  Awful.  (So is the smell.)  And humbling.  Goes to show how easily a bounty can be taken from you with zero notice.

So we are cleaning like furies to get the funk out of our house.  We don't have a garage, so the freezer was in our laundry room.  Kind of nice that we come home from camping for a week, with loads of laundry to do, and the nastiest smell ever is in the room where I have to do all the laundry.  Ick.  Ugh.  Nasty.

Such is life, though, right?

We've moved the freezer to the porch out back to clean it up even more, and I've mopped and bleached the laundry room.  The smell is better at least.

Now we have to figure out how to restock.  I wonder if our friend is going to be butchering another calf anytime soon...... :)  Organic, grass-fed beef.  Now that's what should be for dinner.

Ok, back to work.

Cheers, y'all!

Amy

Oh Amy, that's rotten about the freezer (pun intended). I *hate* when that happens! I'm glad you had a nice trip, it looks like it was a blast!

Looks like a fine time spent in God's creation. We did a lot of camping as the kids grew. Looks like little one had a grand time.

Sorry about the loss of meat and freezer. Such a pity, that grass-fed beef can not be beat. Hope the smell continues to improve. That can sometimes take a while.

Blessings, Lorie
